QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Here are some of the things you might be wondering.
WHAT IS STORYTELLING/ DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY? WHAT WILL WE DO?
It is the photographer’s level of control that differentiates the different styles in family photography (traditional < lifestyle < storytelling < documentary)*. Traditional photography is quite strict in terms of light, outfits, poses etc, whereas in a documentary setting, the photographer go with the flow and place the people in the center. He is here to narrate a family story and will look for emotions, connections, things that will impact the viewer.
For storytelling sessions, we usually agree on an activity and then I follow along. For documentary, I come for half a day and I capture the ups and downs of your everyday, the hard work you put into raising little humans. You decide what you want to remember from this stage in your life, what is important to you now: slowing down while getting ready for this bébé to arrive, the way your toddler still suck his thumb, the sensation of your baby’s weight on your chest, your daughter’s bed head... Life with kids is beautiful and funny but also challenging and sometimes not as easy as we would have thought. A storytelling or documentary session puts back LIFE into the images, from the place we shoot at (home sweet home) to the emotions, to the clothing you’ll pick (hello fairy wings).
I want to create meaningful photos that will strike conversations 10, 20 and 30 years from now.
This type of photography is not for everybody. It is for families who want a time capsule of their ordinary to slow down time. You want to remember the places, the feelings, hear the laughters and even the kids bickering at the back of the car. You embrace the flaws and spontaneity of life with kids.

HOW DO WE KNOW YOU ARE THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER FOR US?
In a word, I want to put back simplicity into family sessions.
If you are afraid that the kids won't cooperate and sit still, that your husband will roll his eyes because "yet another photoshoot", and "we need to drive WHERE?...", or that it will interfere with your family schedule (#naptime), then fear not because the experience I offer is the total opposite. No need to pack the kids in the car because *I* come to you, you don’t need to bribe or beg the kids to cooperate. There is no rush. This type of session is great for active kids who won’t seat still or the more quiet ones who need time to warm up.
You are in your own environment and you do the things you love to do in a place you love to be.
I will not try to convince you that storytelling/ documentary photography is for you. You will know if it is. My clients find beauty in the simplicity. They are quirky families who demand something different, something honest + true to real life. They are less afraid than some to let their guard down. They often come from a multicultural background and are inquisitive about the world we live in. They want to step away from the traditional stiff, posed portraits and want to embrace the flaws and uniqueness of each family member: from the newborn baby to the 4-legged companion. My clients are awesomely weird!
**BONUS** mamas, you will be in the pictures! You won’t be the ghost in the family, the one who takes all the pictures but never appear in one except for the occasional selfie. Let me show you all the love you put into holding that family of yours together.
You deserve better. I have your back. You’re welcome.
I LOVE YOUR STYLE BUT I NEED A MORE FORMAL PORTRAIT TO SEND TO GRANDMA. WOULD YOU DO THAT?
If its important to you, yes! I follow a documentary approach for my sessions, and there is no script or prompt but we can allow a limited amount of time to get some shots of the family together. Don't worry, they won't be the traditional family portraits. We'll keep it short and sweet and play a game or 2 to ensure we are capturing your uniqueness.
HOW DO I RESERVE A DATE AND WHAT ARE THE PAYMENT TERMS FOR A SESSION?
As a mother of 2 little ones, I take a limited number of session each month to ensure I allow enough time to my clients from the first inquiry to the delivery of products while also caring for my family. You send me an email through the contact form on my website (or firstname.lastname@example.org) and we'll discuss time and logistics.
I will send you a contract and the invoice. You will pay the retainer fee directly online. Your session is not booked until you have completed and signed the contract and paid the retainer (one third of the grand total.)
Once your session is booked, I will send you a questionnaire asking you some details about your family. This will help me deliver a highly meaningful gallery of photos.
WILL YOU PUBLISH MY IMAGES ONLINE? WE ARE A PRIVATE FAMILY.
Your privacy is very important to me and I respect it. There is absolutely no obligation. The photographs I take are for you. I don't want you to hold anything during our time together because you are worried of social medias. This session is about you and your family. Period.
But if you allow me to share some, I will use them on social medias for marketing and promotional purposes related to my photography business (everything is described in the model release). If I am published in a magazine, online or win a contest, I will always reach out to you. It is thanks to clients who allowed me to show their images that I can share my work and attract new clients. Let me know if you have more specific questions.
(THANKS TO THE KIDS) MY HOUSE IS A MESS, TOO DARK, TOO PLAIN, NOT PINTEREST-Y…
In an ideal world, we would have a housecleaner, tidy kids, big windows, a white kitchen and we would be living that minimalist life we crave at night. But life happens and as much as we would like to escape the consumerism society, we are surrounded by stuff and artefacts. See it as your memorabilia, traces of your family's story. This is where you live, where your kids love to play and the phase you are in right now. That mug you drink your coffee from or that plastic toy left behind might bring memories to your kids 20 years from now. You never know.
I can work in any kind of light so don't worry about your house being too dark. I will make it work no matter what.
I LIKE THE IDEA OF AN IN-HOME SESSION, BUT WILL I GET ANY IMAGES I CAN FRAME FOR THE WALLS?
You certainly will! Unposed images are my favorites to display at home. They remind me of our travels, the places we visited and bring back all the feelings. Kids love to share their stories and see themselves in pictures. For me, it's another subtle way to say "I love you". Choose a picture that make you feel something, a happy moment that will bring you joy every time you look at it.
Moreover, I have few but stunning products that will enhance your photos. You can enjoy them mounted on a bamboo board (my best seller), or turn the pages of a stunning Moleskine photobook. I recently changed the lab I work with tho offer you gorgeous loose prints if you want to frame them yourself. There are lots of possibilities but at the end what matters is that you enjoy them printed and not in their digital version.
I deliver all the web-resolution files with all my sessions. You can print them up to 5x7" if you want to do it on your own (Use Mpix!). They are perfect to share on social medias too (don't forget to credit me @juliette_fradin_photography). High-resolution digital files are perfect for enlargements so pick your favs.
WHAT IF IT RAINS, SNOWS, MY CHILD IS SICK, I NEED TO RESCHEDULE?
Each client get 1 reschedule date and it is better to let me know as soon as possible.
If the weather does not cooperate we reschedule. But we can totally embrace the moment and shoot in the rain/ snow. It makes beautiful photos as well and something totally unique. Think of a snow ball fight or jumping into puddles followed by a hot chocolate by the fire. Anyway, we will decide what is best for you and your family.
WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR?
While this is completely up to you, there are some things/ colors/ textures that photograph better than others. Here is a simple guideline:
It’s better to stay away from very contrasty colors like black and white together, neon colors, big logos/ text that draw away the attention, perfectly matching outfits… Focus on choosing outfits that compliment one another (both in texture and tones). Soft or natural and earthy tones are beautiful and photograph really well. Same for rich colors such as burgundy and mustard. You can wear patterns. Pops of bright primary colors works really well too. Think of different textures (denim, wool, linen, corduroy, cotton) and add a few layers (scarves, vests, hats…). And if your toddler is breathing night and day into his Spiderman costume, then we might want to incorporate that into your photos.
That being said, if I arrive and your toddler is still in diapers, or refuse to put on his shirt, that is totally fine too. I love to photograph skin (!), there is nothing more human than that! Wardrobe changes are always fun to photograph as little ones tends to have strong opinions. These shots will turn out very authentic and will capture your real life.
DO YOU PHOTOGRAPH EVENTS?
Absolutely. I will be happy to come to your small reunion or birthday party. I photograph your event using a documentary approach like a photojournalist. I capture key moments, take informal shots of families and friends. There is a minimum of 2 hours and you will get approximatively 30-40 images per hour. Contact me for details.
I HAVE HEARD YOU ARE AN ECO-FRIENDLY BUSINESS. WHAT DOES THIS MEANS?
In September 2018, my husband, kids and I have decided to start this journey towards a more sustainable lifestyle, free of plastic. Discovering that almost all of our waste (recycling included) is going to landfill or is shipped to Africa and Asia to be processed threw me off. It was about time we started playing our part. I want a sustainable lifestyle for my kids that is healthier, more simple, and well-balanced.
For my business, almost everything I use is now made from recycled content, and/or can be composted and - at least- can be recycled. I source products that are as eco-friendly as possible for the planet (preference goes to Made in USA), I wrap your goods in a furoshiki style (traditional Japanese way of wrapping gifts with fabric), I use packaging that is recycled and recyclable or compostable. Quality and aesthetic are very important to me and it takes time to find products and companies that share these eco-friendly values. But be certain that I try to be as zero waste as possible in my business (and personal life) while still sourcing great products for my clients.
Unfortunately, the only thing that is not recyclable is the photo paper itself. But you will enjoy the photographs and photo-albums for more than one generation. Enjoy them, look at them on your walls, shelves and books!
I AM NOT READY YET TO BOOK BUT I WOULD LIKE TO STAY IN TOUCH WITH YOU.
And I would love that! The best way to stay in touch is by subscribing to my newsletter. This is my favorite way to interact with people and you will be first to get special offers, tips and news from me.
I hang out mostly on Instagram, and then Facebook so give me some love there.
